What is a Solar Installer invoice?

A solar installer invoice covers the supply and installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, inverters, battery storage systems, and associated electrical work for domestic and commercial properties. Solar installations in the UK must be carried out by MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) certified installers for the system to qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), which allows homeowners to sell excess power to the grid. MCS certification number must appear on the invoice and accompanying documentation. Solar projects are typically invoiced as a fixed-price package including panels, inverter, mounting system, cabling, grid connection, scaffolding, and commissioning. Battery storage retrofits and EV charger installations are common add-ons that should be invoiced separately.

How to invoice as a solar installer

Invoice on completion and commissioning. For larger commercial systems, invoice in stages: deposit, materials delivered, installation complete, DNO notification confirmed. Apply 0% VAT for qualifying domestic solar PV installations (HMRC zero-rated from April 2022). Commercial solar is standard-rated at 20%. Always include the MCS certificate reference on domestic invoices.

Frequently asked questions

What VAT rate applies to domestic solar?
As of April 2022, solar PV panels installed in domestic properties are zero-rated for VAT in Great Britain. Battery storage installed at the same time as solar, or added later, is also zero-rated. Confirm the current HMRC position as rates can change.
Why does my MCS number need to be on the invoice?
MCS certification is required for systems to qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee. The certificate number on the invoice links the installation to the MCS certificate, which the homeowner needs for their energy supplier SEG application.
Should I charge for scaffolding separately?
You can include scaffolding in the all-in price or itemise it. Itemising makes your core installation price visible and helps when comparing quotes. For properties not needing scaffolding, the saving is clear.
How do I handle DNO application costs?
Most residential solar connections do not require a formal G99 application if the system is below 3.68kW single-phase. For larger systems, a G99 application fee (£0-£800 depending on the DNO) applies. Include this as a separate line item or absorb it in the system price.
Can I invoice for the battery separately from the solar panels?
Yes. Battery storage is a distinct product with a distinct price. Invoicing it separately makes the system upgrade path clear for clients who want to add storage later.
