What is a Welder invoice?

A welder invoice covers work fabricating and joining metal components using MIG, TIG, MMA, or specialist welding processes. Welders work across sectors including construction (structural steelwork), manufacturing (custom fabrication), agriculture, automotive, and marine. Common billable work includes fabricating gates, railings, and handrails, structural steelwork for buildings and mezzanine floors, custom fabrication for industrial equipment, repair and modification of existing metalwork, and on-site welding for construction projects. Material costs (steel, stainless, aluminium, consumables) form a significant part of the invoice. Welders certified to specific standards (ISO 9606, ASME) for structural or pressure vessel work command premium rates and should reference their certification on invoices for commercial clients who need compliance records.

What to include on a Welder invoice

Common welder invoice line items

Service Typical Rate Unit
Welding labour (hourly) 50 hour
Metal fabrication (per day) 350 day
Gate fabrication and installation 1200 gate
Steel materials (structural, box section, flat bar) 0 as quoted
Surface treatment (prime and paint) 200 project
On-site welding (day rate + travel) 400 day

How to invoice as a welder

For fabrication projects, invoice on delivery or installation. For large structural projects, invoice in stages: steel cut and prepared, fabrication complete, surface treatment, installation. List steel by grade, section, and weight. Consumables and finish materials should be itemised separately. Net 14 on delivery is standard.

Frequently asked questions

How do I price fabrication work?
Estimate hours for cutting, fitting, welding, grinding, and finishing. Multiply by your hourly rate and add material costs with markup. Structural work requiring certified procedures commands higher rates than general fabrication.
Should I include steel prices in my quote?
Steel prices fluctuate. For large projects with long lead times, add a materials escalation clause. Quote steel at a current price and note that prices are subject to change if steel is ordered more than 4 weeks after the quote date.
Do I need to show certifications on invoices?
For structural or pressure vessel work, referencing your certification (ISO 9606 or equivalent) on the invoice provides clients with compliance documentation. Some commercial clients require this.
Can I charge for on-site travel?
Yes. Charge a daily travel allowance or mileage rate (45p/mile up to 10,000 miles under HMRC rates) for on-site work. Include this as a separate line item.
How do I handle variation work on fabrication projects?
If the client changes the design or specification after fabrication has started, issue a variation order and invoice the additional material and labour separately. Rework caused by design changes is not included in the original quote.
