What is an Upholsterer invoice?

An upholsterer invoice covers work re-covering, repairing, and making upholstered furniture and furnishings including sofas, armchairs, dining chairs, headboards, window seats, and cushions. Traditional upholsterers work with springs, webbing, horsehair, and foam, while modern reupholstering typically uses polyurethane foam and a range of fabric or leather covers. Fabric is the most variable cost in upholstery work and should be quoted separately from labour. Clients may supply their own fabric or choose from the upholsterer's range. For antique or valuable pieces, restoration work may command a premium rate. Collection and delivery of furniture items should be charged as a separate line item.

Frequently asked questions

How do I price a reupholstery job?
Estimate labour hours per piece, add fabric costs at your supply price plus markup, and add any trimming materials. A three-seater sofa might take 2-3 days of labour plus 12-15 metres of fabric. At £30/hour labour and £20/m fabric, total cost is around £450-£600 plus fabric.
Should I charge extra for client-supplied fabric?
No, but you should note on the invoice that client-supplied fabric was used and disclaim responsibility for fabric suitability (rub resistance, shrinkage). Poorly chosen fabric can fail regardless of the quality of your work.
Can I charge for collection and delivery?
Yes. This is a legitimate separate charge. Note the collection address and delivery address on the invoice, and include it as a line item.
Do I need to mention fire regulations on upholstery invoices?
UK regulations (Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988) require that upholstered furniture meets fire safety standards. If you are using compliant materials, note 'materials comply with FFFSR 1988' on your invoice for commercial clients.
What lead times should I include on invoices?
Note the expected completion date on the invoice or quote. Traditional upholstery typically takes 2-4 weeks per piece. Clear communication about lead times prevents chasing calls and manages client expectations.
