What is a Typographer invoice?

A typographer invoice covers fees for creating custom typefaces, display lettering, typographic brand systems, and typography consultancy. Typographers may design entire font families for commercial licensing, create custom lettering for brand identities, or provide editorial and layout typography services. Custom typeface design is one of the most time-intensive forms of type work, often taking months or years for a complete family, while display lettering and logotype design are shorter projects. Typographers licensing their fonts commercially will invoice both the creation fee and ongoing licence fees, which can become a significant revenue stream. Clear documentation of licence terms — whether a standard desktop licence, web font licence, or custom embedding licence — is essential in every typographic invoice.

How to invoice as a typographer

For large typeface design commissions, invoice in milestones aligned to delivery phases: a deposit on signing, a payment at the first review stage, and the balance on final delivery of the font files. For font licensing, invoice the licence fee at the point of sale with clear statement of licence scope. For variable font projects, which require significant technical work, milestone invoicing is essential given the extended project duration.

Frequently asked questions

How do I price a custom typeface commission?
Custom typeface pricing depends on the number of weights and styles, the character set (Latin only vs multilingual), whether it includes variable font axes, and the exclusivity requested. A single custom weight for a brand's logotype use might cost £3,000-£8,000; a full custom family with variable weights for a large corporation can run to £30,000-£100,000+.
What licences do I need to include when selling fonts?
Standard retail fonts come with a desktop licence (for use in documents and print). If the client needs to use the font on a website, they need a web font licence; for apps, an app or embedding licence; for broadcast, a broadcast licence. Each licence type should be separately itemised if the client requires multiple uses.
Do I own the copyright to a typeface I design for a client?
By default, the designer retains copyright unless a work-for-hire or IP assignment agreement is in place. Many custom typeface commissions include an exclusivity period (e.g. 2-5 years) after which the designer may licence the typeface to other clients, followed by full IP transfer or ongoing exclusive licence to the commissioning client. Define this clearly in the contract.
How do web font licences typically work?
Web font licences are usually tiered by page views per month (e.g. up to 50,000 monthly page views, 50,000-250,000, etc.). Clients purchase the tier appropriate to their traffic. For commercial fonts licensed through a foundry or service like Adobe Fonts, the billing is typically on a subscription basis rather than per-invoice.
Can a client modify my typeface after purchasing a licence?
Not without a modification licence. Standard font licences prohibit modification of the font software. If a client wants to adapt glyphs, add characters, or modify metrics, this requires a separate modification agreement and typically an additional fee.
