What is a Gasfitter invoice?

A gasfitter invoice covers work installing, maintaining, and repairing gas piping systems and connecting gas appliances in domestic and commercial properties. All gas work in the UK must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and the Gas Safe registration number must appear on invoices and certificates. Gasfitters install gas meter connections, gas pipework, gas appliances (hobs, ovens, fires, boilers, industrial equipment), and issue Gas Safe certificates on completion. Because gas work is a safety-critical regulated activity, compliance documentation is inseparable from the invoice. Gasfitters often work alongside plumbers and heating engineers on full heating system installations.

Frequently asked questions

Must my Gas Safe number appear on every invoice?
Yes. For any gas work, your Gas Safe registration number is a legal requirement to display. It also provides the client with a reference for the Landlord Gas Safety Record or their own compliance records.
What is a Gas Safe certificate and do I charge for it?
A Gas Safe certificate (or Landlord Gas Safety Record for rental properties) is the compliance document proving gas work was inspected and is safe. You can include the certificate fee in your labour rate or invoice it separately (typically £50-£80 for a standard check).
Do I need to issue a Landlord Gas Safety Record?
Yes, if you carry out a gas safety check on a rental property. Landlords must have an annual gas safety check and keep the record for at least two years. Invoice this as an annual service.
Can I refuse to touch a gas appliance that looks unsafe?
Yes, and you should. If you discover an immediately dangerous (ID) gas situation, you must advise the customer to turn off the gas and not use the appliance. Do not invoice for work that would create a safety risk. Document the issue clearly.
What VAT applies to gas work?
Standard gas work is 20% VAT. Energy-saving measures including certain boiler upgrades may qualify for reduced or zero VAT. Check HMRC guidance for the current position on qualifying works.
