What is a Fencer invoice?

A fencer invoice covers work installing, repairing, and replacing fences for domestic gardens, commercial properties, agricultural land, and public spaces. Fencers install various fence types including closeboard, panel, featherboard, post and rail, post and wire, chain link, palisade, automated gates, and trellis. Labour is typically charged per metre of fencing installed or as a daily rate, with materials (posts, panels, gravel boards, concrete) listed separately. Agricultural fencing (post and wire, stock proof) is priced differently from decorative garden fencing. Ground conditions significantly affect post installation time and cost, particularly in rocky or root-filled ground. Fencing invoices should specify fence height, post size, and panel or rail type to confirm the specification installed.

Frequently asked questions

Who is responsible for a boundary fence?
Boundary responsibility is a legal matter defined by the title deeds. As a fencer, you install on instruction from the person paying. If a neighbour disputes the work, that is between the client and their neighbour.
How do I price a closeboard fence?
Closeboard fencing in the UK runs £70-£100 per metre supply and fit in 2026, depending on height (1.5m to 1.8m is standard) and ground conditions. Difficult ground (concrete, tree roots) justifies a higher rate.
Should I charge extra for difficult ground conditions?
Yes. Rocky ground, tree roots, and heavily sloped sites significantly increase post installation time. Survey the site before quoting and note any ground condition charges in the quote.
Can I charge for removal of old fencing?
Yes. Old fence removal, disposal, and any skip or waste costs should be listed as separate items. Include skip hire or waste removal as a reimbursable expense with the hire receipt attached.
Do I need planning permission for tall fences?
Generally, fences under 2m do not require planning permission. Fences over 1m adjacent to a highway, or taller than 2m elsewhere, may require consent. Advise clients to check with the local planning authority before ordering fences over these heights.
