What is a Set Designer invoice?

A set designer invoice is issued by a freelance or production designer to a theatre company, television production, film production, or opera house for the design of theatrical and screen environments. Set designers create the visual world of a production through sketches, scale models, technical drawings, and supervision of construction. Set designers in the UK typically hold degrees from theatre design or fine art programmes and often build their careers through assistant positions in major theatre companies or television productions. Professional membership with the Society of British Theatre Designers (SBTD) demonstrates professional standards. Sets for theatre are typically billed as a design fee for the creative work (sketches, model, drawings) and a separate supervision fee for the build period. Television and film work is usually day-rated.

How to invoice as a set designer

Theatre set design fees are typically invoiced in stages: 50% on signing of contract, 25% on delivery of technical drawings, and 25% on completion of build supervision. For small fringe productions with tight budgets, a simpler two-stage structure (50/50) works well. For television work, invoice weekly or on completion of the design phase and then on completion of filming. Keep detailed records of days worked on-set. Include credit and publicity rights on your invoice or contract. Set designers are entitled to named credit in programmes, press materials, and promotional content. This is standard industry practice. For co-productions or touring productions with multiple organisations, confirm who is the primary contracting party and how fees are shared. Invoice the lead organisation and let them manage cost-sharing with co-producers.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a set designer charge for a theatre production?
Fringe and small-scale theatre set design fees range from £1,500 to £4,000 in 2026. Mid-scale regional theatre productions range from £5,000 to £15,000. West End and large-scale commercial productions command £15,000 to £50,000+. Television and film design fees are day-rated at £500 to £1,000+.
What is the difference between a set designer and a production designer?
A set designer designs the physical set environment. A production designer has overall responsibility for the visual concept of the entire production, overseeing the set, costume, props, and lighting design as a coherent whole. The production designer role is more senior and is common in film and TV.
Do set designers retain copyright in their designs?
Yes, set designers retain copyright in their original design work. Theatre companies and production companies receive a licence to use the design for the specific production. Subsequent remounts, tours, or transferring productions require a new licence fee unless otherwise agreed at the outset.
What contracts govern theatre set design in the UK?
Most theatre set design engagements in the UK are governed by the Society of British Theatre Designers contract template or the BECTU/TMA agreement for subsidised repertory theatre. Freelance designers negotiating independently should have a written contract regardless of scale.
Should set designers charge VAT?
VAT registration is required when annual taxable turnover exceeds £90,000. Established designers working across theatre and television can reach this threshold. Standard rate 20% applies to all design fees.
