What is a Jeweller invoice?

A jeweller invoice is issued by an independent or studio jeweller to a private client, retailer, or gallery for handmade jewellery, bespoke commissions, jewellery repair, and cleaning services. Independent jewellers in the UK work in precious metals (gold, silver, platinum) and gemstones, creating pieces for direct sale, commission, wholesale, or exhibition. Bespoke jewellery commissions typically involve a consultation, design phase (sketches or CAD rendering), making, and final delivery. The design fee and making fee are often quoted together but may be separated for transparency. Hallmarking at an assay office (Birmingham, London, Edinburgh, Sheffield) is a legal requirement for precious metal articles exceeding certain weights sold in the UK. Jewellery repair (ring sizing, chain soldering, clasp replacement, stone re-setting) is an important income stream for many independent jewellers and is typically priced per job.

How to invoice as a jeweller

For bespoke commissions, take a 50% deposit at the consultation stage. Precious metal and gemstone costs are incurred before the piece is made; the deposit covers these materials. For repair work, invoice on collection of the repaired item. For small repairs, payment at collection is standard. For expensive repairs involving replacing stones or significant metalwork, take a deposit on drop-off. Hallmarking is a legal requirement for gold pieces over 1 gram, silver over 7.78 grams, and platinum over 0.5 grams sold in the UK. Include the assay fee as a separate line item so clients understand this is a legal requirement. For wholesale accounts with retailers, invoice on delivery and set clear credit terms (typically 30 days for established accounts).

Frequently asked questions

How much does a bespoke jewellery commission cost in the UK?
Bespoke silver commissions typically cost £150 to £500 in 2026 depending on complexity. 9ct gold commissions start from £300 to £600. 18ct gold commissions with precious stones can cost £600 to £5,000+. Platinum is the most expensive working metal and commands a further premium.
What is hallmarking and when is it legally required?
Hallmarking is the official testing and marking of precious metal content by an assay office. UK law requires all gold articles over 1g, silver over 7.78g, and platinum over 0.5g to be hallmarked before sale. Articles below these weights are exempt but may still be hallmarked voluntarily.
Should jewellers charge VAT?
Yes, if annual taxable turnover exceeds £90,000. Many established jewellers with strong retail and commission sales reach this threshold. VAT at 20% applies to all jewellery sales and repair work.
What insurance does an independent jeweller need?
Jewellers' all-risks insurance covers stock (in workshop and in transit), tools and equipment, business interruption, and public liability. Bespoke jewellery insurance from specialists (Hiscox, Chubb) is recommended given the high value of materials. Take photographs of all pieces before customer collection as evidence in any insurance claim.
How do I handle a customer's stone that is damaged during repair?
If a stone is damaged during a repair (cracking, chipping), you are liable for the replacement value. Inform the customer immediately, provide a replacement stone of equal quality and value, or agree a settlement. Your jewellers' insurance should cover accidental damage to customer property in your care.
