What is a Bookbinder invoice?

A bookbinder invoice is issued by a professional bookbinder to a publisher, institution, private collector, or individual for bookbinding services including hand-binding, book restoration and conservation, archival binding, edition binding, and bespoke decorative binding. Bookbinding is a skilled craft combining knowledge of paper, board, adhesives, leather, and cloth with manual dexterity and an understanding of book construction and book history. Professional bookbinders in the UK may specialise in fine hand-binding, library and archival binding, book conservation and restoration, or edition binding for publishers. Pricing is highly variable and depends on the complexity of the construction, the quality of materials, and the level of decorative work required. Simple paperback or library binding is significantly less expensive than full leather hand-tooled fine binding.

How to invoice as a bookbinder

For commission work, take a 50% deposit before beginning. Fine binding work is labour and materials intensive; the deposit covers your initial costs. For institutional clients (university libraries, archives, museums), invoice on completion of the work and delivery. Institutional clients typically have 30-day payment terms and may have purchase order requirements. For book restoration and conservation, provide a condition report and estimated cost before beginning work. Issue a supplementary invoice if additional issues are discovered during the treatment that require extra work. For edition binding (binding multiple identical copies for a publisher), invoice per volume with a volume discount for larger quantities.

Frequently asked questions

How much does professional hand-binding cost in the UK?
Simple cloth case binding starts at £60 to £100 per volume. Full leather hand-sewn binding ranges from £200 to £500+. Highly decorative fine binding with gold tooling, painted panels, or complex structures can cost £500 to £2,000+ per volume. Edition binding for publishers is priced per unit in volume.
What qualifications do professional bookbinders need?
The City & Guilds qualification in Bookbinding and the Designer Bookbinders training programme are recognised UK qualifications. Designer Bookbinders membership (DB) demonstrates the highest level of bookbinding artistry. Conservation bookbinders typically also hold qualifications in paper and book conservation.
What is the difference between book restoration and book conservation?
Book restoration aims to return a book to its original appearance, which may involve replacing lost materials. Book conservation prioritises the stabilisation and preservation of original materials, intervening as little as possible. Conservation is the preferred approach for archival and heritage collections.
Do bookbinders need to charge VAT?
VAT registration is required when annual taxable turnover exceeds £90,000. Many sole-trader bookbinders working in a niche market operate below this threshold. Standard rate 20% applies to all bookbinding services.
Can a bookbinder provide archival binding for institutions?
Yes. Archival binding to BS 5454 and ISO standards is a specialism within bookbinding. Archival binders use acid-free materials, reversible adhesives, and construction methods appropriate for long-term storage. Libraries, archives, and museums require archival binding for preservation of their collections.
