What is a Pet Sitter invoice?

A pet sitter invoice is issued by a self-employed or small business pet sitter to a pet owner for pet sitting services including overnight home boarding, in-home pet sitting (pet sitter stays in the owner's home), drop-in visits, and cat sitting. Pet sitting provides an alternative to kennels and catteries for pet owners who prefer their animals to stay in a home environment. Pet sitters who board dogs in their own home for payment in England must be licensed by their local council under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) Regulations 2018. This is a legal requirement, not optional. Licences are awarded after an inspection, and boarding limits are set per licence. The pet sitting sector includes cat sitters (who visit cats daily in their own home while owners are away) and exotic pet sitters who care for rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, and reptiles. Each type of pet sitting has different pricing and billing patterns.

How to invoice as a pet sitter

Issue an invoice or booking confirmation when the client accepts the booking. Take a deposit at booking (20-30% of the total) to secure the dates. Issue a final invoice at the start of the booking or the week before. For regular drop-in clients (daily cat visits), invoice weekly or monthly. Regular small payments are best managed via standing order or digital payment requests to reduce admin. For school holiday periods and peak seasons (Christmas, summer), enforce your deposit terms rigorously. These slots are in high demand and late cancellations represent significant lost income. Keep records of all visits and payments. For boarding licence compliance, you may also need to keep records of dogs boarded, their vaccination status, and the owner's emergency contact details.

Frequently asked questions

How much does dog home boarding cost in the UK?
Dog home boarding typically costs £25 to £50 per night for a single dog in 2026. Rates vary by location, the sitter's experience, and whether one-to-one care is offered. Cat sitting (daily drop-in visits) typically costs £12 to £18 per visit.
Do pet sitters need a council licence to board dogs?
Yes. Dog home boarders in England must hold an animal activity licence from their local council. The licence requires an inspection and sets conditions for the welfare of boarded animals including limits on numbers, insurance requirements, and welfare standards.
What insurance does a pet sitter need?
Pet sitter public liability insurance is essential. This covers injury to people by animals in your care, damage caused by animals, and loss or injury to animals. Many policies also include veterinary fee cover. Narnia Insurance, Cliverton, and Petplan Sanctuary offer specialist policies.
What happens if a pet becomes ill or is injured in my care?
Take the animal to the vet immediately. Contact the owner as soon as practical. The owner should have provided a vet authority form and their vet's details at the start of the booking. Keep all vet paperwork. Notify your insurance provider as soon as possible.
Can I charge for medication administration?
Yes. Administering medication requires additional care and responsibility. Many pet sitters charge a small fee per medication administration or per injection. Clearly state this in your terms and confirm the medication requirements before accepting the booking.
