What is an Optometrist invoice?

An optometrist invoice covers clinical eye examinations, contact lens assessments, specialist low vision assessments, and associated eyecare services. Independent optometrists and domiciliary eyecare practitioners invoice patients for NHS or private eye examinations, contact lens fitting and aftercare, dry eye assessments, myopia management, and specialised examinations not covered by the NHS. Contact lenses and spectacles are separate product sales from the eye examination service. Optometrists are regulated by the General Optical Council (GOC) and the GOC registration number should appear on professional invoices. Eye examinations are complex from a VAT perspective: private eye examinations may be VAT-exempt; spectacle and contact lens sales are subject to VAT.

Frequently asked questions

Is an optometrist's eye examination VAT-exempt?
Private eye examinations carried out by a GOC-registered optometrist for medical purposes qualify for VAT exemption as a supply of medical care. Spectacle and contact lens sales are separate product supplies subject to standard VAT.
How do I invoice for contact lens subscription services?
Monthly contact lens subscriptions are a recurring product sale. Invoice monthly with the lens type and quantity. VAT applies to the lens supply.
What is domiciliary eyecare and how is it invoiced?
Domiciliary eyecare is examination of patients who cannot attend a clinic (housebound patients). It may be NHS-funded (GOS) or private. For private domiciliary work, add a travel surcharge to the examination fee.
How do I handle NHS voucher claims alongside private fees?
NHS vouchers cover the cost of spectacles up to certain amounts. Invoice the patient only for the private top-up above the voucher value. Submit the NHS claim separately to the NHS Business Services Authority.
Should GOC registration appear on spectacle sale receipts?
For clinical examination invoices, yes. For spectacle sale receipts (product only), the dispensing optician's name and the practice address are typically sufficient. Check GOC guidance for current requirements.
