What is a Special Education Tutor invoice?

A special education tutor invoice is issued by a specialist educator to a child's family, school, or local authority for specialised tutoring and learning support for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). SEND tutors work with learners with dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism spectrum conditions, ADHD, sensory processing differences, and a range of other learning profiles. SEND tutors in the UK typically hold qualifications in specialist education such as OCR Level 7 in Specific Learning Difficulties (dyslexia), Level 7 in SpLD (SpLD Trust approved), or are qualified teachers with additional SEND specialist training. Many work with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) which may fund specialist provision through the child's local authority. Specialist tutoring commands higher rates than standard tutoring due to the advanced qualifications, highly tailored approaches, and the significant difference the right support can make for a young person's educational trajectory.

How to invoice as a special education tutor

For LA-funded EHCP provision, invoice the local authority directly. Each LA has specific invoicing requirements. Obtain the correct billing contact, PO number, and invoice format before starting any provision. For privately funded specialist tutoring, invoice monthly or after each session block. Families funding specialist provision privately may be under financial pressure; clear, predictable billing is appreciated. For formal assessments (SpLD assessments for dyslexia diagnosis), invoice on delivery of the written report. A deposit at booking is appropriate as assessment and report writing is time-intensive. DBA check is mandatory for any tutor working with children and young people.

Frequently asked questions

What qualifications does a dyslexia tutor need?
Specialist dyslexia tutors should hold OCR Level 5 or Level 7 in Specific Learning Difficulties (Teaching), or the British Dyslexia Association's Approved Teacher Status (ATS) or Accredited Teacher Status. For formal assessments, a Level 7 qualification with the BDA or PATOSS is required. AMBDA (Associate Member of the British Dyslexia Association) is a widely recognised credential.
How much do specialist SEND tutors charge?
Specialist SEND tutors with Level 7 qualifications typically charge £70 to £100+ per hour in 2026. Formal SpLD assessments (required for GCSE and A-Level access arrangements) typically cost £450 to £750 for the assessment and report. LA-funded provision rates are often set by the local authority.
What is an EHCP and how does funding work for tutoring?
An EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) is a legal document from the local authority specifying the support a child with SEND should receive. If specialist tutoring is specified in Section F of the EHCP, the LA is obliged to fund it. Tutors provide directly to the child and invoice the LA.
Are specialist tutoring sessions VAT-exempt?
Individual specialist educational tutoring provided by an individual teacher is exempt from VAT under Group 6, Schedule 9 VATA. Assessment reports and formal diagnostic services may have a different VAT treatment if they go beyond tutoring. Confirm with HMRC or your accountant.
Do SEND tutors need DBS checks?
Yes. An enhanced DBS check with the children's barred list is mandatory for anyone working regularly with children and young people. SEND tutors should ensure their DBS is current and appropriate for their role.
