What is an Art Teacher invoice?

An art teacher invoice is issued by a self-employed art instructor to a student or parent for private art lessons, group workshops, or structured art classes. Private art teachers teach drawing, painting (watercolour, oils, acrylics), printmaking, illustration, and other visual arts disciplines to students of all ages and abilities. Art teachers may work from home studios, hire community or educational space, or visit students at home. Group workshops are a time-efficient model for generating income while building a community around your teaching. Many art teachers have degrees in fine art or art education, teaching qualifications (PGCE), or a combination of professional practice and teaching experience. Some hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and teach in schools while also taking private clients.

How to invoice as an art teacher

For regular weekly students, monthly invoicing is straightforward. For workshops and one-off sessions, take payment at booking or on the day. For children's art classes, invoice parents monthly or per term. School holiday intensive workshops are popular; invoice in advance with a non-refundable deposit. If you supply materials (paper, paints, brushes), either include the cost in your session fee or charge a materials fee separately. Be transparent about what students need to bring and what is provided. For group workshops, take a deposit to confirm places. Empty seats in a workshop represent real loss; a deposit (typically 50% of the workshop fee) reduces no-shows.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a private art teacher charge?
One-to-one art lessons typically cost £35 to £65 per hour in 2026. Group classes (4-8 students) are typically £15 to £25 per student per session. Full day workshops range from £60 to £120 per person. Materials may or may not be included.
Are private art lessons VAT-exempt?
Individual art tuition provided by an individual teacher is VAT-exempt under Group 6, Schedule 9 VATA. Group workshops may have a different VAT treatment if they are more of a recreational/cultural service than individual instruction. Confirm with HMRC or your accountant.
What qualifications do art teachers need?
There is no legal requirement for qualifications to teach art privately. However, a fine art degree, teaching qualification (PGCE, QTS), or a portfolio demonstrating professional practice gives clients confidence. DBS check is recommended when teaching children.
How do I structure pricing for a children's art club?
Children's art clubs are typically priced per session per child (£10 to £20) or as a term block (6-10 sessions). Include materials in the price for simplicity, as parents prefer all-in pricing for children's activities. Set a minimum number of participants to make the session viable.
Can I teach art in my garden studio?
Yes. Many art teachers work from home studios. Check your home insurance covers teaching activities and confirm your council does not restrict commercial use of a residential property. For children's classes, ensure your studio is safe and accessible and that you have appropriate DBS certification.
